Man searching for a job on the computer

Thinking About Going Back To Work At Your Former Workplace?

It’s not uncommon for someone to leave a job for something new and then realize they’d rather be back in the old environment. There are many reasons for this, including a fear of the unknown. But when deciding what to do next, how do you know if returning to your previous company is the right move?

Here are some things to consider.

Give Things a Chance

Often, the fear of the unknown drives the desire to back to what’s comfortable. The only way you’ll know if it will work is to give it a try. Unless there are untenable circumstances in the new positions, such as the role being different than described or unethical behavior, give it a fair chance.

Consider The Future and Review the Past

Where do you see yourself in ten years? Which role will give you the best options for growth to reach your long-term career goals? Why did you leave your last position? Was there behavior in the office among management or coworkers that made you dissatisfied? Were you not learning new things? Did you feel burned out?

Review What’s Changed

Before you make your next move, look at what has changed. Reviewing the circumstances that led to you leaving, have any of those been addressed? For example, if your commute was too long, that isn’t likely to change. If a manager made you uncomfortable and they’re no longer with the company, there might be an opportunity to return.

Examine All Your Options

The world isn’t binary. Your options aren’t only staying where you are now or returning to your old position. Take this time to consider what else you could do to move into a place you would engage with more.

Make Your Decision

Once you’ve evaluated all your options, it’s time to make your decision. If you decide to give notice at your new position and talk to your previous manager, it’s good to get that ball rolling quickly. If you choose to stay to give your new job a shot, give yourself a timeline. If you’re not feeling more comfortable after six months, consider searching for another position better suited to your career goals.
