Striking the Right Balance Between Teamwork and Individuality

A person can’t run a business all by themselves; they have to take the help of other people. And there are many situations when working together as a team becomes necessary. Each person in the team performs a different function, depending on their interests and their strengths. Plus, it’s always good to have input from different people with different points of view. And this only occurs when you work in a team.

A Little Humility Goes a Long Way

When you’re working as a team, you have to coordinate with other people. This means that you can’t hog the spotlight all the time. A little humility goes a long way.

A lot of people feel like they have something to prove, so they might insist on getting credit for each and every thing they do. There’s nothing wrong with this. However, you’ve also got to make sure that your team members are getting the credit they deserve. When you’re being lauded for something, make sure that anyone else who had a role in it also gets praised.

Giving Credit Where Credit Is Due

Although humility is a great thing, it doesn’t mean that you should let anyone else take credit for what you do. If you’ve been working hard on a project for months, you should be the one to present it to the potential client or the higher ups.

In cases like this, you have to speak up and let the person in charge know that you’re not going to let something like this slide. Because once you let something slide once, there’s a chance that it’s going to keep happening again and again. And by the time you get around to speaking up, it might be too late.

The Advantages of Teamwork

The best thing, when working with a team, is to keep an open mind. Most people are not out to get you or take credit for your work. They just want to contribute to the team and help get the job done.

Your team members will also be there to help out when you need help. There might be times when you just can’t finish the work assigned to you but a team member helps you out.

And at other times, you might find that your team members come up with great, off-beat ideas precisely because they’re not doing your job all the time. Sometimes, being immersed in a certain task can actually prevent you from thinking outside the box. And someone who specializes in something else might come to the task with fresh eyes.
