What can you do to put your best foot forward and demonstrate right from the beginning that you’re a team player ready to get to work? Here are a few tips that can help you make a great first impression at your new job.

Understand Workplace Etiquette

Every company is different, so it will be essential to learn the specific workplace etiquette and know the universal basics. It can pay off to:

  • Arrive early on your first days
  • Talk to people outside of your immediate work area
  • Dress appropriately for the workplace
  • Ask questions when you don’t understand something
  • Be willing to jump in to help

Respect Your Coworkers

The hope is that you genuinely enjoy spending time with your coworkers, but that doesn’t happen every time. When you mix different people, there can be conflicts. But to avoid a negative impression at work from your employer and team, be respectful to your coworkers even when you disagree with them. When collaborating, don’t take credit for work that isn’t yours, and be respectful of your coworker’s time.

Handle Mistakes Properly

Everyone makes mistakes. That’s not the problem. What can be problematic is how you handle mistakes after they happen. Don’t cover it up or shift blame to someone else. Be honest about the error and take action to correct it. Most of the time, our fear and anxiety about what will happen if we make a mistake is worse than the actual outcome if we own up to it.

Follow the Dress Code

Before you start, be sure you understand the dress code required by your employer. Follow that dress code to ensure that you are adhering to the rules established. Employers don’t want to police what people are wearing, so you’ll be just fine if you follow the dress code. Make sure your clothes are clean and in good repair, too.

Avoid Drama or Controversy

In the workplace, you want to remain neutral and not participate in gossip. Leave controversial subjects at home and avoid talking about things such as politics and religion with your coworkers. Even if you agree, it’s best to leave these conversations for the future or another time where they are more appropriate.
