Resume 101 – Who Should I Include as a Reference?

References are an essential part of a job search. Employers want to discuss your experience with previous supervisors so they can get a better understanding of your ability to do the job. This step is critical and without the right information, you may not be considered for the final steps. But it’s very important to know who to include in your list of references. Before your next interview, consider these options.

Review Your Contacts

The first step is to consider who from your previous career can speak about your experience. You want to pick someone who will say positive things but also speak truthfully. At the top of your list should be former managers or coworkers. If you’ve not had a lot of professional experience, consider a professor or someone you worked with on a project.

Know What You Want to Accomplish

You also want to pick references who will touch on some of the most important aspects that transfer to the job you want. It’s okay to create a list of things you want your references to touch on. Make a list so it’s easier for you to communicate when you move on to the next step of the process.

Give Them Heads Up

Never give the contact information of a reference without asking permission. This also gives you a chance to talk to them about the things you expect the hiring manager to be asking about when they call. If you keep up with networking relationships, this will be an easy task so it’s a good habit to get into. Always make sure you have a positive relationship with them.

Provide Correct Contact Information

It’s no longer necessary to include your references on your resume. It’s not even important to have the statement “References available upon request.” In every job situation, the hiring manager will ask for this information. Be prepared. You already have permission, so make sure you also have their most up to date email address and phone number.
