4 Trait Tips to Success

Whether you are looking to move up in your current company or you feel it is time to move on to another company, being promoted to a leadership position, such as a manager or supervisor, is both an exciting and scary experience. No matter the industry, there are at least four characteristics that you should develop if you want to be a successful leader. These are necessary for getting hired.

Communication

Those who work under you need to understand what is expected of them. Clearly explain concepts, and be open to any questions people may have. When those working under you have questions, suggestions, or concerns, listen. When needed, schedule one-on-one time to allow an employee to address any concerns. At times, you may need to have a follow-up conversation. Putting away your phone and other distractions while you are talking to your employees shows that you respect the person’s time.

Delegation

Delegating tasks gives you more time to complete the work that you need to get done. It also shows your trust in other people’s abilities. Focus on your employees’ strengths and talents, allowing them to develop their skills, thereby benefiting the company. Trying to do everything on your own makes you look controlling and demonstrates a lack of confidence in those who work under you.

Praise

No one achieves success completely on their own. Thank your employees when they have helped you or the company. Recognize the efforts of those who have worked extra hard, putting in overtime or helping out where they were needed. Instead of taking credit for every group success, recognize those who made that success possible.

Approachable

As a supervisor or manager, you want to let others know that they can approach you when they have questions, concerns, or ideas. Make jokes (when appropriate), have an open-door policy, invite employees to come talk to you one-on-one, and otherwise work to allow them to know that they can come talk to you when needed. If you are new to the company, you may have to go out of your way to let them know that you are approachable, especially if the previous boss was not someone the employees felt comfortable approaching with problems or suggestions.
